ED treatment in the Philippines for expats and visitors
Prescriptions for foreigners in the Philippines
Does a Viagra prescription from home work in the Philippines? Pharmacist discretion, local e-prescriptions, providers for foreigners and paying without GCash.
Short answer
A prescription from home may or may not be accepted: that is the pharmacist's call, and many Philippine pharmacists will only dispense sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis) against a prescription from a PRC-licensed doctor. The safest route is a Philippine e-prescription from a short online or in-clinic consultation. You can pay by card or cash if GCash and Maya are not an option.
Is a prescription required for ED medicine in the Philippines?
Yes. Sildenafil, tadalafil and the other PDE5 inhibitors are prescription medicines in the Philippines. Chain pharmacies such as Watsons, Mercury Drug, Southstar Drug, TGP and Rose Pharmacy ask to see a prescription at the counter, and Watsons labels its online listings for these medicines "prescription required".
That is the same rule most readers know from the US and Australia. It is stricter than the UK, where the NHS notes that sildenafil 50 mg can be supplied by a pharmacist after a consultation as Viagra Connect. That route does not exist in the Philippines, so a UK reader used to collecting it over the counter will need a prescription here. For more on the rules, see Is Viagra over the counter in the Philippines?
Will a pharmacist accept my foreign prescription?
Sometimes, and you cannot predict it in advance. There is no published rule that obliges a Philippine pharmacist to accept, or to refuse, a prescription from a doctor licensed abroad, so in practice it is left to the pharmacist on duty.
Things that make acceptance more likely:
- The prescription is typed, in English, with the generic name (sildenafil or tadalafil) as well as any brand.
- It shows the doctor's name, practice address, registration or licence number and a contact number.
- It is recent, and the details on it match your passport.
- The pharmacy is a large branch in a city with many foreign residents, such as Makati, BGC, Cebu City or Clark.
Things that make refusal more likely:
- A handwritten or photocopied prescription, or one only on a phone screen.
- A brand name the pharmacist does not recognise. Brand names differ by country, and some brands sold abroad are not sold here.
- A smaller provincial branch, where the pharmacist may prefer to follow the strictest reading of the rules.
If a pharmacist declines, do not argue the point or go elsewhere looking for someone less careful. Their caution protects patients, and there is a simple alternative.
What is the safest route? A Philippine e-prescription
A prescription from a doctor licensed by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) is accepted at every licensed pharmacy in the country. For a foreigner, it is the dependable way to fill a prescription here, and it takes little time.
You can get one in two ways:
- Online consultation. You complete a medical questionnaire online, sometimes followed by a video or chat consult. If treatment is suitable, the doctor issues an e-prescription. Some services also arrange delivery of the medicine.
- In person. A general practitioner, internist, urologist or men's health clinic can assess you and write a prescription. This is the better route if ED is new, if you have heart disease or diabetes, or if you would like a physical examination and blood tests.
Philippine prescriptions show the doctor's PRC licence number. If you want to confirm a doctor's licence, the PRC has an online verification service on its website.
Ask the doctor to write the generic name on the prescription. That lets you compare local brands at the pharmacy, which can make a large difference to cost: see sildenafil prices and tadalafil prices, or the same figures in dollars, pounds and euros.
Which providers serve foreigners?
Here is what each provider we track says on its own site about foreign patients. We record "not published" rather than guess.
| Provider | Says it serves foreigners? | How you consult |
|---|---|---|
| Pulse Clinic | Yes, per its own site | In clinic in Manila and Angeles/Clark; messaging by WhatsApp, Viber or LINE |
| Rocky (GoRocky) | Not published | 3 to 4 minute online assessment |
| NowExpress | Not published | Online assessment, doctor review within 24 hours |
| &you | Not published | Online intake, then video consult |
| Doctor Anywhere | Not published | 20-minute GP video consult in the app |
| andSons | Not published | Teleconsult |
"Not published" does not mean a service refuses foreigners. It means the site does not say. Before you pay for anything, ask the service through its chat or contact form whether it accepts patients on a foreign passport, and whether it accepts foreign-issued cards.
Pulse Clinic stands out for expats because WhatsApp is the messaging app most foreigners already use, and its Angeles clinic is close to Clark, one of the largest communities of foreign residents. In Makati and BGC, hospital urology departments and men's health clinics also see many foreign patients; see ED care in Makati and BGC.

What does the doctor need from me?
A consultation for ED is a medical assessment, not a formality. The doctor needs enough information to prescribe safely, and the questions are the same whether you are Filipino or foreign.
Have these ready:
- Your medicines, by generic name. Include anything for blood pressure, the heart, the prostate, diabetes, depression, and any antifungal or HIV medicines. Mention nitrates (nitroglycerin, isosorbide) clearly: they cannot be combined with ED medicines.
- Your heart history. A heart attack, stroke, stent, bypass or heart failure, and roughly when.
- Your previous ED treatment. Which medicine, which strength and how well it worked. A photo of your old prescription or pack helps.
- Your identity details. Usually your passport name and date of birth. Some services ask for an address for delivery.
The doctor decides the medicine, strength and how often. If they decide an in-person examination is needed first, that is good practice, not a refusal.
How do I pay without GCash or Maya?
GCash and Maya are the default way to pay online in the Philippines, but many foreigners cannot open full accounts. You have other options.
- Credit and debit cards. Check whether the service lists Visa or Mastercard at checkout before you begin. Foreign-issued cards are sometimes declined by local payment gateways, so tell your bank you are in the Philippines and try a small payment first if you are unsure.
- Cash at the pharmacy. If the service sends your e-prescription to you rather than delivering the medicine, you can fill it at any branch and pay cash or card there.
- Cash on delivery. Some services offer it; check the service's checkout page, because it is not offered everywhere.
- In-clinic payment. Clinics and hospitals generally take cards and cash at the cashier.
Consultation fees vary from free to a fixed fee. Rocky lists its consult as free; Doctor Anywhere's GP video consult is US$9.17. Pharmacy prices are listed in the main price guide.
Can I use my Philippine prescription when I go home?
Generally not to collect medicine. Pharmacies in the US, UK, Australia and the EU expect a prescription from a doctor registered in that country, and a Philippine prescription will not usually be accepted for dispensing.
It is still worth keeping. Your home doctor can see what was prescribed and why, and it supports you at customs if you carry the remaining tablets home. Ask the Philippine doctor for a short letter that lists the generic name and strength. For travelling the other way, see bringing ED medication into the Philippines.
What to avoid
Some sellers offer ED tablets to foreigners with no prescription asked, online, through social media or in person. These products are often unregistered or counterfeit, and their contents and strength are unknown. FDA Philippines warns repeatedly against unauthorized health products. Every registered product can be checked on the FDA Verification Portal, and our guide to fake ED pills shows what a registered pack looks like.
See a PRC-licensed doctor
If your home prescription is not accepted, or you want a local prescription for a long stay, a consultation with a PRC-licensed doctor is the quickest fix. It works in English and takes a few minutes online.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Can a Philippine pharmacy fill a US or UK prescription for Viagra?
It is up to the pharmacist. Some accept a clear foreign prescription in English, many do not. A prescription from a Philippine doctor licensed by the PRC is accepted by every pharmacy.
Can a foreigner get an online prescription in the Philippines?
Often yes. Online consultations are run by PRC-licensed doctors and are open to adults in the country. Pulse Clinic says on its own site that it serves foreign nationals; other providers do not say either way, so ask before you start.
Do I need a Philippine ID or local phone number?
For a consultation, a passport is usually enough. A local mobile number helps with delivery and with payment apps such as GCash and Maya, but card payment and cash work without one.
Is a Philippine prescription valid back home?
Generally not for dispensing. Pharmacies in the US, UK, Australia and Europe expect a prescription from a doctor registered in that country. Keep the Philippine prescription and a doctor's letter so your home doctor can see what you have been taking.
