Viagra (sildenafil) in the Philippines

Viagra is the original sildenafil, now from Viatris. Strengths, checked Watsons prices, how to check FDA registration and how it compares with cheaper generics.

Short answer

Viagra is the original brand of sildenafil, developed by Pfizer and now marketed in the Philippines by a Viatris company. It comes in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets and needs a prescription.

At Watsons, Viagra 50 mg was listed at ₱915 a tablet when we checked. Registered generics with the same active ingredient start at ₱49 (Erecto, TGP).

What is Viagra?

Viagra is sildenafil citrate, the first PDE5 inhibitor for erectile dysfunction, approved in the United States in 1998. It blocks the PDE5 enzyme so that blood can flow into the penis when you are sexually aroused; it does not cause an erection on its own, and it does not raise desire.

Pfizer developed and launched Viagra. In 2020, Pfizer's Upjohn division, which held Viagra, merged with Mylan to form Viatris, and Pfizer's own product page now says the brand has moved to Viatris. In the Philippines, an FDA advisory names PF OFG Philippines, Inc. (a Viatris company) as the marketing authorization holder for Viagra 100 mg.

Because the patent has expired, many generics now contain the same medicine, including Spiagra, Zilden, Erecto and RiteMed sildenafil. Our sildenafil guide covers the medicine in depth.

Is Viagra registered with the FDA Philippines?

Yes, Viagra holds Philippine registrations, and you can see them yourself on the FDA Verification Portal at verification.fda.gov.ph. Choose drug products and search "Viagra"; each strength appears with its registration number, holder and manufacturer.

We have not quoted a registration number here, because the portal is the current record. Viagra is also a common target for counterfeiters: the FDA Philippines has warned the public about fake Viagra 100 mg tablets. Get it only from a licensed pharmacy, against a prescription, and compare the pack with the portal entry. Our page on fake ED pills shows what to check.

How much is Viagra in the Philippines?

At Watsons, Viagra was listed at ₱683 for 25 mg, ₱915 for 50 mg and ₱1,168 for 100 mg, per tablet. These are the highest verified sildenafil prices on this site.

The gap to generics is large. At 50 mg, the cheapest verified sildenafil is ₱49 (Erecto, TGP), so Viagra costs about 19 times as much. At 100 mg, the cheapest is ₱51 (Spiagra, TGP), a gap of about 23 times. See the Viagra price page for every pharmacy and the sildenafil price page for all brands.

What strengths does Viagra come in?

Viagra is listed at Watsons in three strengths:

  • 25 mg
  • 50 mg
  • 100 mg

The strength is decided by your doctor, who considers your age, heart, liver and kidney health and other medicines. Do not change strength on your own.

Viagra vs generic sildenafil: is there a difference?

The medicine is the same. Viagra and registered generics all contain sildenafil citrate, and a generic must show bioequivalence: the same amount reaches the blood, at about the same speed, as Viagra.

What differs:

  • Price. Viagra costs many times more than the cheapest registered generics at every strength.
  • Maker. Viagra is the originator, with decades of manufacturing history. Generics come from other companies, named on their registration.
  • Look. Viagra is the familiar blue, diamond-shaped tablet. Generics vary in colour and shape; this does not change how they work.
  • Availability. Viagra is stocked at Watsons, Mercury Drug and most large chains. Some cheaper generics are mainly found at TGP or Southstar.

Some men prefer to stay with Viagra because they trust the brand or have used it for years. Others switch to save money. Both are reasonable, and a doctor can confirm a generic is suitable for you.

Should expats use Viagra or a local generic?

Either is fine as long as it is registered and prescribed. Many expats arrive knowing the Viagra name and are surprised that Philippine generics cost a fraction of the price at home.

A prescription from your home country is accepted at the pharmacist's discretion, so the safest route is a Philippine prescription. Our guide to prescriptions for foreigners explains the options.

Can you use Viagra if you have diabetes or high blood pressure?

Often yes, but only after a doctor has checked. Diabetes and hypertension are among the most common causes of ED in Filipino men, and many men who need sildenafil are already on maintenance medicines for one or both.

Sildenafil can lower blood pressure a little on its own, and more so with alpha blockers (used for blood pressure or an enlarged prostate). Most other blood pressure and diabetes medicines are not a problem, but your doctor needs the full list, including anything from a barangay health centre. ED can also be an early warning of heart disease, so a consultation is a good moment to check blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure.

What are the side effects of Viagra?

The common side effects are headache, flushing, a blocked or runny nose, indigestion and dizziness, usually lasting a few hours. Some men notice a blue tinge to vision or sensitivity to light.

Serious effects are rare but need urgent care: an erection lasting more than 4 hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or chest pain. Viagra interacts with nitrates, alpha blockers used for blood pressure or the prostate, and some antifungal and HIV medicines. Read more in ED medicine side effects and safety.

How do you get a prescription for Viagra?

You need a prescription from a licensed doctor. A GP, internist or urologist can write one after a short consultation, and so can a telehealth doctor, which many men choose for privacy.

Our guide to whether Viagra is over the counter explains the rules, and online ED consultations compares the services. Ask your doctor whether a generic suits you as well: under the Generics Act, prescriptions in the Philippines carry the generic name, sildenafil, which lets the pharmacist offer the lower-cost options. A doctor will also check for diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, which often sit behind ED.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes Viagra in the Philippines?

Viagra was developed by Pfizer. Its Philippine marketing authorization holder is named in an FDA Philippines advisory as PF OFG Philippines, Inc., a Viatris company. Viatris took over Viagra in many markets when Pfizer's Upjohn unit merged with Mylan in 2020.

No. Viagra is a prescription medicine in the Philippines, and pharmacies such as Watsons list it as prescription required. You need a prescription from a licensed doctor, which you can get in person or through a telehealth consultation.

Is generic sildenafil as good as Viagra?

A generic registered with the FDA Philippines contains the same active ingredient and must show it delivers the same amount to the blood. The main differences are price, maker and the look of the tablet.

What strengths of Viagra are available?
